Health Claims - Major Surgery

Current statistics show that of all claims submitted to TOWER for major surgeries, 55% of claimants are female (45% are male).

The average age of claimants at major surgery is 46 (females) and 49 (males).

Some examples of actual, high-cost claims paid

Occupation             Age              Procedure                                 Amount Paid

Registered nurse     44                 Mastectomy                                 $24,227

Pilot                         48                Brachytherapy*                            $25,238

Dairy farmer             38                Hip replacement                          $16,292

Sales consultant       33                Disc replacement                          $26,349

Painter                     45                Coronary artery bypass                 $30,180

*Bracytherapy is an advanced cancer treatment where radioactive seeds or sources are placed in or near the tumour itself, giving a high radiation dose to the tumour while reducing the radiation exposure in the surrounding healthy tissues.

From a patients perspective treatments like brachytherapy can mean less surgery and as a result, less time recovering, but technology comes with a cost. For example brachytherapy for prostate cancer will cost approximately $23,000 - $26,000, versus prostate removal at approximately $4,700 - $10,800.

All statistics are based on TOWER Health & Life Limited's data as at January 2005.
